The National Cancer Institute ( NCI ) is the federal government ‘s chief means for cancer research and educate. Established under the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health ( NIH ), one of 11 agencies that make up the Department of Health and Human Services ( HHS ) .

As a federal representation, NCI receives its funds from Congress. The bulk of our budget supports extramural grants and cooperative agreements to facilitate research conducted at universities, medical schools, hospitals, cancer centers, inquiry laboratories, and private firms in the United States and abroad.
