This project provides gamey quality orthophoto scenery for X-Plane that can be well shared among the residential district. Each orthophoto package will cover a big region that may include multiple states, or a part of a large express .

8/9/2019 – Nevada 2017 released
8/8/2019 – Idaho 2017 released (now includes a bit of western Montana)
8/6/2019 – Oregon 2017 released. Note that the new version goes a bit further to the east than the previous version.
8/6/2019 – Washington State 2017 released.
8/4/2019 – Utah 2018 Patch released.  Includes correct overlay files. 
8/4/2019 – Arizona 2017 Patch released.  Fixes elevation issues south of border and at PHX, and also includes correct overlay files.
7/21/2019 – Utah 2018 Released!!  The new packages will supersede previous packages and cover the remainder of the US.  I have spent the last couple of months pre-downloading and processing imagery so the releases should come out fairly quickly from this point.
7/22/2019 – Arizona 2017 Released.  Now includes tiles along US-Mexico border and all other improvements listed below.
Help
Seed the files on BitTorrent. This undertaking will not work if people do not seed the files, childlike as that. Seeding plainly means that after you download a file, you allow other people to download parts of the file from you. The more people that seed, the faster everyone else will be able to download the files. If we do n’t get adequate people seeding, then unfortunately development will stop. BitTorrent is the alone distribution method financially feasible for this project since we are transferring many terabytes of data every month .
If you have the ability to set up a mirror or seed corner on a dedicated server that would besides be amazing .
Versions
2017 and 2018 Imagery Packages
The packages that are named “ XYZ_2017_torrent ” and “ XYZ_2018_torrent ” are the most holocene updates and will supersede all previous packages once complete. Details on the updated packages are below :
Imagery:

  • Updated imagery dated 2017 and 2018 from NAIP (public domain from USDA Farm Service Agency)
  • Zoom Level 18 near ICAO airports, Zoom Level 17 near other airports, and Zoom Level 16 everywhere else (using Automated Zoom Levels code by Artesim)
  • Extended water masks (including inland waterways) provides textured water along the shorelines of lakes, rivers and oceans.
  • Improved blending between states so there is smooth transition from one state to another.
  • ZL 14 imagery from Sentinel 2 project used to fill gaps along border with Mexico and a few military bases. Sentinel-2 cloudless – https://s2maps.eu by EOX IT Services GmbH (Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2017 & 2018)

Elevation Data:

  • Based on 1/3 arc-second (about 10 meter spacing) DEM from USGS (most accurate data available for US)
  • Sloped runways with airport smoothing
  • Primary road smoothing
  • Curve Tolerance 0.5 near airports and coasts, and 1.5 everywhere else.
  • Triangle count limited to 2,000,000 to help provide good frame rates everywhere

Overlays (3D Autogen and road networks)

  • Packages include four options.  HD Mesh Version 3 (for XP10), HD Mesh Version 4 (for XP11) with permission from alpilotX, as well as the default X Plane 10 and 11 overlays.  You can choose which one works best for your own preferences.

Arizona – Grand Canyon HD
Other Notes : This package is 100 % Zoom Level 18. eminent end calculator and video recording menu recommended. compatible with Arizona software, just make sure the HD software has higher priority in scenery_packs.ini .
Australia
Other Notes: Zoom Level 14 ( Sentinel-2 ) for entire continent, except greater Sydney area is ZL17. Queensland booklet by chance included under the the South folder, so you ‘ll have to move Queensland out to be it ‘s own booklet .
California v5
Other Notes : US-Mexico boundary line region and Vandenberg AFB region uses ZL14 imagination from Sentinel-2 .
California – San Francisco HD
Zoom Level: 100 % ZL 18
Other Notes : This software is 100 % Zoom Level 18. high end computer and television card recommended. compatible with California v5 software, just make certain the HD package has higher priority in scenery_packs.ini .
Colorado
Other Notes: Error with yOrtho4XP_Overlays folder. You must create a folder called “ Earth nav data ” and then move the +30-110 and +40-110 folders into the newly created folder. See other packages for sample distribution of right folder social organization .
Hawaii
Other Notes: I know there is some weird color near Hilo, which I hope to fix in the future. Hawaii is very unmanageable due to poor people quality of source imagination .
Mexico
Source: Zoom Level 14 ( Sentinel-2 ) for integral state. Tiles at border with US will be added subsequently .
New England (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT)

BitTorrent Distribution
BitTorrent allows us all to share the tax and expense of distributing the files. When you download the files, you are not downloading from a central server, you are downloading from early generous users. then other users download from you when you finish ( called seed ). If you download the file and then remove it from your BitTorrent customer, that ‘s called bleed. Do n’t be a bleed .
There is nothing illegal about using BitTorrent for this purpose and it is identical safe. If you are newfangled to BitTorrent, I would recommend the qBittorrent customer ( hypertext transfer protocol : //www.qbittorrent.org/ ), which is an excellent, open reference, BitTorrent node. It is identical bare to use and does n’t come with any spyware or anything like that .
Re-distribution
ascribable to the bombastic file sizes, distribution of the files will be via the BitTorrent network. however, you are free to download and redistribute the files via other means with the only restriction being that commercial consumption is prohibited and you must not remove or modify the readme.txt file from the software. If you want to burn them on a DVD and send them to a friend, that ‘s finely. If you want to sell them on eBay or elsewhere, that ‘s not all right .
Technical Stuff
The orthophoto scenery packages are based on end product created by Ortho4XP by Oscar Pilote .
I have color corrected the source images to remove the “ washed out ” appearance that is park with orthophotos. The settings vary a bit by region, but in general, the colors should appear dark and deeper than they would without the color correction .
Installation Instructions
Windows

  1. Download the torrent file for the regions you are interested in from the links at the top right of this post.  Open the .torrent file with your BitTorrent client, which will initiate the downloading of the scenery file.  Once download is complete, please continue to share the downloaded file to help others.
  2. Once download is finished, unzip the downloaded file to your Custom Scenery Folder. If you already have a folder called yOrtho4XP_Overlays, that’s fine, just let the new files unzip to that folder as well.  The newer packages contain multiple versions of the yOrthoXP overlays file. You will just pick one of them.  You can delete the ones you decide not to use, or save them for later in case you change your mind.

    yOrtho4XP_Overlays_XP11 – Default XP 11 roads, trees and buildings (will only work with XP11 only)
    yOrtho4XP_Overlays_XP10 – Default XP 10 roads, trees and buildings (will work with XP10 or XP11)
    yOrtho4XP_Overlays_HDv4 – HD v4 roads, trees and buildings by Alpilotx (will work with XP11 only)
    yOrtho4XP_Overlays_HDv3 – HD v3 roads, trees and buildings by Alpilotx (will work with XP10 or XP11)

    You can try the different overlays to see what works best for you.  In general, the HD files will be higher quality, but might impact frame rates.

  3. Navigate to the \textures sub-folder. You will need to convert all the JPG files in this folder to DDS files.  The best way to do this is to use Gastonreif’s batch file which can be downloaded below.  Just unzip it to the textures folder and click on the bat file. Some of the older packages have bat files included, which can be ignored.
  1. Wait patiently.  The conversion process will take several hours on a fast machine and could take a day or more on a slow machine.
  2. Make sure you have the correct number of DDS files (as reported in the readme.txt file) and they are all the same size.  If you are missing a DDS file or one is corrupted (for example if your machine turns off in the middle of converting a texture), you’ll get an error when you try to load that area.  If you think you have a corrupt DDS file, try sorting the folder by file size and the corrupt ones might have a smaller files size.  You can also install XnViewMP, which will create thumbnails of all your DDS files which you can then quickly scan for any that are corrupt.
  3. Update your scenery_packs.ini file as shown below. These should be the last two entries, unless you have other global scenery packages installed, in which case these would probably go above the other global packages.

That ‘s it. Once the DDS files are created, you can delete the JPG/EXE/DLL/BAT files from the /textures folder. Do not delete the DDS or PNG files .
A few of the packages besides contain two versions of the terrain data, one based on a Curve Tolerance value of 1.0 and another based on 3.0 .

  • If you want to use the recommended version (based on a Curve Tolerance of 3.0), no action is needed and the Earth nav data_ct1 folder can be deleted, or save it if you want to try it later.
  • If you want to use the higher resolution version (based on a Curve Tolerance of 1.0), then delete or rename the Earth nav data folder, and then rename Earth nav data_ct1 to Earth nav data. Warning, the Curve Tolerance 1.0 version may lead to very long load times and decreased frame rates, especially in mountainous areas.

Mac Instructions
lapp as the Windows instructions, except you will need a different tool to convert the JPG files to DDS. Download the Mac-Convert-JPGs.zip file from below. Extract the two files to the textures sub-folder containing all the JPG files. then click on “ _Mac_Users_Click_Me ” to start the conversion process. big thanks to TimRodeo314 for putting this together .

Linux Instructions
Zorz posted the surveil instructions for Linux. ImageMagick can be used to convert from JPGs to DDS textures. On ubuntu this handwriting can be used to convert all JPGs in a directory to DDS :

mmmcalzones besides came up with a linux command to convert the textures. The — max-procs argument controls the count of latitude processes

Troubleshooting / F.A.Q.
IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION OR NEED HELP, PLEASE POST YOUR QUESTION UNDER COMMENTS, NOT REVIEWS.
Question : I have a Mac and have problems with converting files, flood node, etc.
Answer : unfortunately, I ‘m not a Mac person and can not offer any aid on Mac issues. It does seem like Macs have some trouble with the action in general. Try posting your question in the Comments section and possibly person else can help you .
Question : Is n’t this illegal to share tiles created with Ortho4XP ?
Answer : I ‘m using elevation data from the USGS and orthophoto data from public knowledge domain sources with no restrictions on their use. otherwise, yes, if you are using Bing, Google or USA, those images are all copyright protected and legality of distributing them is questionable, which is why I wo n’t use them .
Question : Why do I need to convert the files from JPG to DDS ? That takes a long time.
Answer : If I were to distribute DDS files rather of JPG, the packages would be 3-4 times larger and it would take you 3-4 times longer to download them. just not practical .
Question : Why do I get an error that says could not locate image file for terrain ?
Answer : Either you did n’t convert the JPGs to DDS or something happened during the conversion process. Check the textures folder for the dds charge listed in the error message. If you think you might have a corrupt DDS file, you can use XN View MP to view thumbnails of all the DDS files to see if any are corrupt .
Question : Why is the water located ? ? ? firm rather of nice X-Plane water ?
Answer : This is probably an issue with the OSM water data. unfortunately, it ‘s actually not virtual for me to manually correct OSM errors as that would be very time consume. If person wants to take on this job, that would be great .
Question : How farseeing will the JPG to DDS conversion take ?
Answer : A fast Windows machine with an NVIDIA based graphics cards should take a few hours for the file conversion to complete. Macs, and slower Windows machines based graphics cards can take importantly longer .
Question : I did the conversion and everything works, but I ‘m missing roads, trees and/or 3D buildings.
Answer : If this is for California or Colorado, see the extra instructions above. If it ‘s for another state, then you most likely have another global scenery layer with a higher precedence than the y_Ortho4XP_Overlays entry in your scenery_packs.ini file .
Question : When will the imagination for XYZ state be updated in the future ?
Answer : Each year, 1/2 of the states up updated. Currently, I am using imagination from 2015 and 2016. I do plan on updating imagination as new imagination comes on-line .
Question : When will you be doing XYZ department of state ?
Answer : Sorry, but I have no formal timeline for completion of this project. It ‘s something I work on in my spare time and depending on real life sentence, I might have respective weeks with no spare time. The design is decidedly to complete the stallion US.

Question : How can I create tiles using NAIP imagination ?
Answer : It is not possible to add the NAIP imagination to the version of Ortho4XP that is available from Oscar ‘s Dropbox bill because there is a unlike server for every state and they must be blended together. I ‘m using a special development adaptation of Ortho4XP that is available only on github which allows multiple sources to be blended together. however, the development translation is for boost users merely. The github version besides requires all your existing data ( Orthophotos booklet, etc. ) to be wholly reorganized and you must install it using the “ python method acting ” .
Question : How is this different than me just using Ortho4XP.
Answer : If you ‘re glad with your own tiles created by Ortho4XP, then by all means, use them. The aerial photograph source I ‘m using for the US ( NAIP ) is not available on Ortho4XP. The NAIP imagination generally has much better tinge blending so you wo n’t see patches of imagination with different contrast like you do with BING, etc. In accession, I ‘m using much more accurate elevation data than you would get from Ortho4XP .
Question : Why are n’t the area near the US edge completed ?
Answer : Working on it. Version 5 packages will include ZL14 imagination of the US-Mexico border area .
